Khmelnychchyna is one of the most scenic places for tourists. Different areas of the region have the remains of 14th — 18th centuries: castles, churches and other buildings, that are attractive for people from the whole world.
Right here you can find a town of Kamianets-Podilskyi, the oldest town of Khmelnytchchyna situated in the banks of Smotrych River. In 1432, it was granted with Magdeburg Law, and two years later it got the status of a Royal Poland town. And it’s difficult to name a more naturally fortified place in Ukraine as Kamianets. Is situated on an island, carved-out kam_exby the waters of Smotrych River in solid limestone. A great stronghold with thick walls and seven towers protects Kamianets from 16th century till our days.
In a fortress, you can find a museum of weapons, medieval prison, old cannons, and try yourself in archery. Besides, you can see how people got water in Middle Ages and even get souvenirs from Ukrainian Hetman.
If you’d like to stay in Kamianets, you can find many hotels and hostels. People here are friendly and always ready to help, but unfortunately some of them don’t know English, so it’s better for you to find a guide and plan your trip beforehand.
Also, in Kamianets you can visit restaurants and bars, different souvenir shops (where you can buy wooden swords, shields, bows, candies and other stuff, that will remember you about this unforgettable trip).

Khotyn Fortress – a great stronghold

Hello, my dear friends! Today I’d like to tell you about ancient castle – Khotyn Fortress. I10931316_536092759839286_3283914357065077321_n.jpgt has a long and glorious history. Besides, it’s one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

First, Khotyn Fortress was a little fort, that was founded by prince Volodymyr in X century to protect western part of Ruthenia. Later it became a big castle. During its story, it was destroyed for many times and captured by Polish and Turkish armies.

As for me, the most prominent event in castle’s story was the Battle of Khotyn. In 1621, Turkish sultan started the war against the Polish king. At that time, Polish army needed more soldiers, that’s why the king asked cossacks’ chieftain Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny to support his forces. After a short discussion, 40000 cossacks came to Khotyn Fortress to protect it.
The Turkish army was much bigger and included 400000 warriors, horsemen, artillery and even elephants, but Sahaidachny was brilliant general and nobody doubts, cossacks were the best infantrymen in the whole Europe. Besides, all of them knew how to fight against Turks, because they often attacked Turkish towns and ports.
The defence of the fortress was flawless and the sultan had to sign the Treaty of Khotyn, but only in 1650 another famous Ukrainian chieftain Bohdan Khmelnytsky finally freed Khotyn Fortress from invaders.

It’s interesting, that you can see odd symbols on one of the castle’s walls. They were sacred to Christians. Under this symbols, people often see a strange spot and no one knows why it appears, but the legend sais that the man was walled-up there. It’s really scary, isn’t it?

Also, every spring you can visit the festival “The battle of nations”, which takes place near the fortress. You can see difContentImageHandler.ashx.jpgferent exciting tournaments. Besides, during the festival, you can visit medieval fair and tavern. The medieval theatre is open for visiting and you can enjoy different performances or listen to folk songs played by bands from different parts of Europe. In the evening, you can visit fire-show.

If you want to spend some days in Khotyn, you can book rooms in local hotels, but don’t forget to do it beforehand. I’m sure, you will not regret!KoBsgNa2sIU.jpg
